top 15 movies of all time

Godfather

A man being dragged into the world of Mafia to protect the life of his father, when all he wanted was out and he goes on to be the biggest Boss. Al Pacino, Marlon Brando & Robert De Niro. The first two movies are masterpieces.

Brando gives one of his world class performances (wins Oscars – Best Actor) and we see the birth of the great Al Pacino with this movie. The movie won the Best Picture award at the Oscars as well.

Men have a lot to learn from this movie with lines such as “Women and children can be careless, but we can’t – Brando says” , “Never tell anyone outside the family what you are thinking”, “this is not the life I planned for you and the kids. I do not apologize for my life. My father’s life was in danger, what was I supposed to do?” – Micheal tells his wife about how he entered the world of Marfia and shot the two people in the face to protect his father.

Apocalypse Now

One of the best movies of Marlon Brando which shows his great charisma on screen. The whole story is about a drunk and suicidal soldier – Martin Sheen who gets a last assignment by the army to kill Marlon Brando. This was the time when some believed that Brando was at his best acting prime and some believed that he was so good and had no match, that he is going a bit insane. Both these aspects can be seen in the movie.

The entire story is about Brando’s character’s life and his achievements in the army and how he is now living outside the law being worshiped by thousands of people, deep in the jungle, who believe him to be a God like figure.

The movie is more than 2.5 hours long but Brando is there maybe only for 20 minutes of the movie at the end. But this appearance is enough to cover for the entire movie since the entire story builds up to that moment.

Martin Sheen ends up killing Brando. One of the best war movies!

Deer Hunter

One of the good movies when Robert De Niro was running the show in Hollywood. It talks about friends returning back home after the war to find out that home is not what they thought and they themselves were not the people who left to join the army.

Christopher Walken gives one of his best performances here which earns him an Oscar award. Meryl Streep was still in her 20’s and this was her first Oscar nomination. The movie was nominated for 9 Oscars and won 5 including Best Picture among others.

Bridges of Madison County

One of the best love stories! Clint Eastwood is a drifter who travels around the country and meets Meryl Streep when her husband and children were out of town for the weekend. She had been taken for granted and there had been no love in her life until she meets Clint. They fall in love and then the reality hits back. For both of them it’s the love of their life but she belongs to another and she has responsibilities.

Some might call her a cheater, but I think it’s a bit complicated than that. Watch the movie till the end, especially the traffic light scene.

Legends of the Fall

Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins teamed up to bring this tragic family love story. Brad Pitt is the second son and his youngest brother comes home with his fiance. The youngest brother joins the army and Brad Pitt goes with him to keep him safe. But he fails and the youngest brother dies. The fiance is left at home with the father and the oldest son. The oldest son falls in love with her, but she is interested in Brad Pitt.

Watch how the love story takes turns and how everyone ends up dead. The brothers and father’s love for each other despite everything is something beautiful. It may sound like a weird plot, but it’s not.

Message in a Bottle

A New York reporter – Robin Wright, finds a message in a bottle and gets attracted to the guy’s love for his dead wife to whom he wrote the message. She tracks him – Kevin Costner, down and pretends to have just bumped into him. They fall in love for each other. Later he finds out how she lied to him.

But they find their way back to each other and finally he is ready to let go of his wife who died many years ago and he writes her a last letter and puts his wedding ring with the message. He takes his sailing boat into the sea one last time to say goodbye to his wife and start his life again with Robin Wright. But is life that simple?

Casablanca

I never expected to fall in love with a movie that was released 43 years before I was born. But damn, this blew my mind away! Humprhrey Bogart falls in love with Ingrid Bergman in this movie and they decide to run away and he waits for her at the railway station but she never turns up. He is heartbroken thinking that she changed her mind and leaves without her and becomes a businessman who doesn’t care about anyone but his work.

Many years later she walks into his bar with her husband they all thought was dead. She never expected to see him and they fall in love but the ending is the best part of the story. For those who like tragic love stories, this is a must watch.

Ted 2

You would need to be someone who enjoys the bad things in life a little, to enjoy this movie. If not this would downright offend you the f* out. It’s so funny and Mark Wahlberg kills it with the jokes and Seth with his voice of Ted is insane. You would need to watch part 1 of the movie to get an idea of how the story started.

If you have a crazy bunch of friends, this is the ideal movie to watch with them together. Otherwise you would end up watching the moving alone, laughing on your own from start to finish.

Wuthering Heights

The mansions and the valleys of Wuthering Heights have always left me a great attraction to the movie. This movie had been done many times over but the 1992 version with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche is the best one. Ralph as Heathcliff is something that can’t be matched. His ability to love a woman that much and his ability to be so cruel to a child in the same capacity is something only someone like Ralph could portray. After watching the movie so many times and knowing how it ends, I still find myself wishing it would end a little different.

Saving Private Ryan

The great movie quote – “Earn This” was one line that got stuck in my head from the first day I watched it. Steven Spielberg tells this war story to perfection. There is no main villain in the movie apart from the German army, but it’s such a heartbreak to watch all the heroes of the movie die one after the other trying to do the correct thing. There’re many big names in the movie such as Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel and Giovanni Ribisi

Shawshank Redemption

One of the best prison movies of all time. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins nails it. The story revolves around Tim Robbins character and how he is sent to jail for killing his wife and her lover when he found both of them on his bed. Life in jail is not easy and the show tries not once to deny this fact and shows the actual facts as they are. I think this is what made the movie popular. Freeman once talks about the prison walls “first you hate them, then you start to get used to them, then you can’t live without them. They send you here for Life and that’s exactly what they take from you”

Last of the Mohicans

A movie about the American ancient tribes which is one of the best war-romance movies of all time. Daniel Day Lewis makes all the difference with Wes Studi supporting him as the main villain.

Daniel is one of the best actors of all time with 3 Oscar awards for the Best Actor role and he is the only person to ever achieve this. This is one actor you must follow with movies such as Gangs of New York, The Age of Innocence, There will be blood, Lincoln, etc. He is very picky about the movies he acts and for the last 34 years he had been in the industry, he only had acted in 21 movies. Nailed every one of them!

Training Day

The great Denzel Washington plays the villain in this movie which shows how cool he can be even as the bad guy. He is downright evil in the movie, but you can’t help rooting for the guy, since it’s Denzel!

It’s a narcotic movie about the first day at work for Ethan Hawk who joins up the narcotic department under Denzel. Ethan finally takes away all of Denzel’s options and finally Denzel gets murdered for his sins.

The Lord of the Rings

This was the first DVD movie that I bought more than a decade ago and it was the beginning of my insane addition to movies. The world of Middle Earth is so cool and the stories that were shown in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy was breathtaking. The great battles, the sacrifices made, the elves, wizards, downfall of great kingdoms of old were some of the attractions of these movies.

The acting was good as well with Ian McKellen, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortensen, Cate Blanchet and Hugo Weaving.

Les Miserable

This movie had been redone many times over, but the 1998 movie with Liam Neeson as Jean Valjean and supported by the likes of Geoffrey Rush, Uma Thurman and Claire Danes was by far the best one.

Before Liam Neeson was popular for his badass charisma, we see glimpses of his brilliance in this movie which is very heartwarming. I still have this great fond memory of the movie in my mind which is a great feeling to have.
